Obituary

Quietly and peacefully on Monday, April 5, 2021, our Almighty God, in His infinite wisdom, mercy and grace, called home our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother ("GG"), Ida Lee (Harvey) Merritt, to eternal rest. Ida was born on February 15, 1934, in Pamlico, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Eliza Octavia Harvey and David Best.
Ida was educated in the Pamlico County school system. On January 23, 1954, Ida was joined in holy matrimony to Curtis Duvall Merritt, who preceded her in death on April 24, 1987. From this union four children were born: Sharron Otelia Merritt (Garvin), Kelvin Van Dyke Merritt, Irish Jerome Merritt. and Justina Marie Merritt (Walker). Ida and "Curt", as he was affectionately called continued to reside in Oriental, NC before relocating their family to Philadelphia, PA around 1957. After Curt's passing, Ida was determined to pass on the importance of family.
Over the span of her lifetime Ida worked in various occupations: in-home childcare provider, both day and evenings in order to help provide for her children; Disc maker manufacturing and custodial manager of office crew staff. Ida continued to work well into her 80's. She would often say, working and moving will keep you young. She was an avid walker because as she often said, it kept the blood flowing and the joints active. Ida accepted Christ in her life at an early age and re-dedicated herself to Christ approximately 30 years ago and became a faithful member of the Household of Faith Apostolic Church in Philadelphia, PA. She was a willing worker and helped when needed, serving as a mother of the church, in the missionary ministry, Usher and President of the Pastor's Aide Committee.
Ida was intelligent, independent, strong willed, determined, and loving matriarch of her family. She put the needs of others before her own and was always available to help anyone in need. She loved socializing with loved ones and boldly offering conversation to strangers alike. She made friends everywhere she went.
After her cancer diagnosis, Ida fought a good fight to remain with her family as long as she could. Although she suffered greatly, as always she rarely complained even after the death of her two youngest children: Irish Jerome, and Justina Marie. She always knew that as much as she loved and missed them, God loved them more and that they along with her husband had been received into His Kingdom. Ida was also preceded in death by her sisters: Martha Mann, Madie Morgan, Ella Duckrey; and brothers: Preston Hall and James Best.
Ida leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memory: her daughter, Sharron Otelia son-in-law (Leonard, Sr.); son, Kelvin Van Dyke; nine grandchildren: Towanda, Marla, Leonard & Tyrell Garvin, Lisa and Jabez Merritt, Irish Jerome Merritt Jr., Markeeta Upshaw and Jamaine Walker; eleven great-grandchildren: Alanah Robinson, Janiyah Garvin, Toteyana Upshaw, Markese Jones, De'Shyne Henderson, Zyan, Moriah, Tyra & Justin Merritt, Jeremiah Vereen and Jahmier Walker; one great-great-grandchild: Serenity Thompson; one god-daughter, Martha (Selena) Butler; sisters-in-law; Deloris (Dee) Bowman (Washington, DC), Campin and Sadie Merritt (Philadelphia) and Glenda Fay Merritt, North Carolina; one brother-in-law: James Merrittt (North Carolina); and a host of other loved ones, including, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors. She loved deeply and was loved deeply in return.
